It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts... it is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and always to think for themselves.

'To Kill A Mockingbird' Quotes.

"Colored folks won't have 'em because they're half white; white folks won't have 'em 'cuz they're colored."
-Jem, page 161.

My thoughts: This is still the truth in society. It hurts to think that people still classify people like that. I have a friend who is half black, and sometimes I wonder if he ever feels that way.

"I have nothing but pity in my heart for the chief witness for the state, but my pity does not extend so far as to her putting a man's life at stake, which she has done in an effort to get rid of her own guilt."
-Atticus, page 203.

My thoughts: I love this sentence/paragraph because it sums up everything that the reader is feeling. Pity is the perfect word, because it definitely made me feel bad. I sincerely love how this quote was put.

"There is not a person in this courtroom who has never told a lie, who has never done an immortal thing, and there is no man living who has never looked upon a woman with desire."
-Atticus, page 204.

My thoughts: Atticus made a very good point. There is not one person who hasn't ever lied. There isn't a person who hasn't done something that they don't regret.

"They've done it before and they did it tonight and they'll do it again and when they do it it seems that only children weep."
-Atticus, page 213.

My thoughts: This really speaks to me. They knew Tom was innocent, but since he was black, they'll keep doing it. The adults won't be upset because they are so used to this happening.
